Takao's toughest Trails

And we did it again!

Finally, four of us reached Mt. Jimba, and of course, the well-deserved bath in the river and the Soba followed our 29k/4h effort!…

Kamakura Spiritual Run

Run. No word has so much controversy: run. You love it, you hate it, you promised yourself you will never do it again, yet you are back on the road faster than you think. Run....…

Coaching Advice

Last night I took the train with one of our members who is quite an experienced runner, but new to track work-outs. She wanted to know how fast to run her track repeats, and how to decide on targets for certain distances in races. I told her about the-10-second rule (or 4-second-rule for track races), and about Toni Nett and Frank Horwill. I will now try to give a few hints to all of you who are not quite sure how to set target paces for certain work-outs.

Almost 50 years ago Toni Nett… Continue

Chemical (MSG, flavour enhancer, amino-acid) free soba stand ... kano-ya

This chain soba noodle

stand (with seats, though) is kano-ya (かのや). They do not

seem to have a website but you often see them in town (not at stations, I think). There is one in Shinjuku W near the Yodobashi

Camera, below…

Vladimir Kuts. Zatopek's successor

1950-1954 was without doubt Emil Zatopek's era. He was the male star of the 1952 Olympics, winning 3 gold medals. However by the middle of that decade he was no longer the dominant force and was unable to repeat his astounding feats at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. His best result of those games was a sixth place finish in the marathon; which was won by his old friend Alain Mimoun of France.

His heir as the the distance king of the 1956 games was a Soviet army officer called Vladimir…

Run at Mt. Takao

Today, eight members took on the hills at Mt. Takao, it was hot at the station, but the higher we got up the mountain, the better the air felt! But still, I think we drank about one liter per hour of running. Juergen and Robert made it to a pass 2k before Mt. Jinba, but had to return because of time constraints. The others selected shorter routes.

Everybody enjoyed the healthy Soba-noodles…

Events in Korea

If anyone is interested in taking part in any event in Korea, then let me recommend the site marathon.pe.kr

On it are heaps of events of all different distances througout the country.

Most of the events are listed in Korean; as is the website. However some do have English options. Nevertheless knowledge of hangeul would certainly be an asset..

Otherwise contact me with a prefered date ( most events need to be entered about a month in advance) and what distance you want…

2010 Tateyama Sprint Triathlon Race Report by 3rd Overall Chris Parry

This was a very unexpected pleasant result; achieving 3rd overall at the 2010

Tateyama Triathlon in Chiba prefecture, Japan. It surprised everyone that after years of over

indulgence, there can still be an athlete inside me. There were 100 male

participants for this 25.75km race. I was 16th out of the swim

section, 4th by end of bike portion, and then just 12…

I joined the 12th Kitatanzawa Mountain Race on 4th July, 2010. Kitatanzawa is placed in the northern part of Tanzawa Mountain ranges in Kanagawa prefecture. I enjoyed beautiful greens, fresh air, tasty fresh water and cicadas singing in the race. The…

Gold Coast Marathon

A sub 3 ( ambitious ) target was muted but it was not to be on the day - ran 3:08 in perfect conditions, on a flat course.

On reflection the june training ( endurance phase ) suffered, and I had to cut short long runs for fear of being too injured to race.

Happy with the first 32kms then ran through the proverbial soup, with a very tired and emotional finish !!

Proper rest now, to rid myself of this shin splint once and for all, and onto the next one… Continue

Gasubashi 8k

Only three Namban members ran the notoriously difficult Gasubashi 8k today. As usual, it was hot, but a bit overcast, so, it could have been worse. Keren (922) finished in 33:19, Frank made it in 33:49, and Juergen was fastest today in 32:29. Not bad, as all the Garmins agreed that the course was 300m long. Too bad Harrisson got injured...…
