Dong-A Marathon/Seoul

Yesterday I went to support Leng Leng and several members of the Seoul Flyers at the Dong-A Marathon in Seoul. I met Arnaud at the start, there were too many people, so we failed to see Leng Leng on the course. I was able to yell some support for some of the Seoul Flyers (see picture above). Mark (3rd from left was best, getting close to his PB in 2:40:20). Leng Leng PB'd in 3:24.

The race was won by Sammy Korir (Kenya) in… Continue

10k Misari/Seoul

Kimchi and Tofu after the race

Today I ran the 10k in Misari in the greater Seoul area. My friend Bokjin Park picked me up from the nearest station at 8am. The picture below shows me in front of his shoe-stall. FAAB (Free As A Bird) is a shoe for ultrarunners, BJ is the chairman of one of the Korean ultramarathon associations.

As the race started at 10:10, I had enough time to warm up, so I ran about 6k, best way to stay warm in… Continue

Ujigawa 10k/Kyoto

On Sunday I ran the 10k at Ujigawa in Kyoto. Runnet said it was quite flat, so I was surprised to see it started up on a hill and went 2k straight down to Uji City (the place of the famous Bjoudo-iin, the temple on the 10Yen coins). I gave up on trying to run a good time before the race already, as I had driven all night from Friday to Saturday morning 6am, so I felt without pressure at the start. It was cold and snowing! I went through the first 5k in 18min., due to the downhill. I was very… Continue

Volunteers needed for race in Kyoto on April 27.!

Dear all,

I am organising a charity run at Kamogawa on April 27., it is for an NPO named 'midori-no-miyako' I started a few years ago.

I'm not sure how many volunteers my friends in Kyoto can secure, especially not how many of them know much about running. So, I would be happy if somebody could help. Please spread the word to friends in Kansai, and drop by if you travel West in Golden Week!

More info will be available on runnet soon, happy to have contributed a second event to… Continue

Tokyo Marathon 2008

I went to support the Namban Runners at Tokyo today, had a great time, eventhough it was freezing. Jay sent a report to the flashnews section which I upload here now. Will include more as soon as people post on the list.

I had a blast today running an "unofficial half" at the 2nd Tokyo Marathon. For me it was a big "moving party" on a sun-splashed morning running sequentially with Stu, Rie, Yuka, Paddy, Gerard, Joachim, Martin, Bob,… Continue

Juergen's Shibuya

I was so busy doing other things around this Ekiden that I haven't written anything about my own race. I felt good! I hadn't practiced any speed in recent weeks, just hills and races (see my HongKong posts). So I was very happy to settle into a good rythm right away, run the first k in 3:29, and even being able to almost keep the pace. I passed one guy very soon, and then Bob shouted:"There is somebody 25 seconds ahead, catch him!" That kept me motivated, and I actually passed the runner…

Shibuya Ekiden Teams

Shibuya Ekiden is usually the biggest event of the year for Namban Rengo. Definitely not because it is a particularly famous race, probably because it is in our 'home park', and very easily accessible. I still need substitutes an helpers, please join!…

Cheung Chau Island 10k/HK

Today I ran the last of my three races in Hong Kong, 10k on Cheung Chau island this morning at 10am. I was in bed before 12, so I was relatively fit this morning, but obviously, the fatigue of two races showed. And the course was extremely hilly and probably a bit long. I placed 5th over-all and 2nd in age-group, getting another nice trophy. My time was 43:17, Gary Eng ran 54:26, the winner was not too far ahead of me, so…

Shek Kong 10k/30k Hong Kong

Yesterday I ran the 10k, the shorter one of the two 'undulating' courses near Shek Kong in Hong Kong, and I finished in 38:46, a very good result on a challenging course. Just my splits on the first 3k are proof for this: 3:43/3:30/4:22!

I placed 2nd in age-group and 3rd over-all, got lots of stuff and a nice trophy!

Here the longer version of my story:

Boxing Day Run, The Peak, Hongkong

On the 26., Jay and I ran the Boxing Day Run in HK. It is only 4k, mostly uphill in the beginning, followed by a steep downhill in the end. I pushed at the start, trying to follow Mark Reeves, who was actually leading our age-group. I caught up with him at the highest point, just to loose him again on the downhill, finishing second by 3 seconds. I would have easily won the 50's, by about two minutes, I think. We got all…

Ota-Ku 10k

Today, a considerable group of Namban turned out for this conveniently located, but not too well-organised race in Ota.

There were no k-markers, so I took Gerards splits at certain points to try and time myself accordingly. The race had three loops, and after the first loop, I was just 30sec. back. After the second, it was about 1:20, but I slowed down just a bit to finish 2:25 behind, which is as close as I have ever…

No race today...

Too bad, I missed the chance to run another race in Korea. Just recovered from a stomach flu, I don't how well I would have done, though. I received the following mail from the guy who promised to register me (not anybody I mentioned before):

- 3. Due to my laziness, I forgot your race registeration when I fail
registeration of race. -
Now I know how well Namban registration assistance works!

I'll try again in March!

Cold, but no cold!

It becomes clearer and clearer that my throat-problems are Tokyo related. It's minus 5 here at night, and even around lunchtime, when I run, only about plus 5, so I do my uphill repeats wearing a relatively heavy long-sleeve. Still, today there was hardly any cough when I finished!

Looking forward to the 10k race in Yeoido at the Han River on Dec. 1.!

Worldcup Stadium Seoul 5k

I won the 5k at Worldcup Stadium today, in a ridiculously slow 18:45. I had wanted to run 10k, but my friend Jae had only a number for the 5... never mind, it was a good practice, and, as I started from the back, still a reasonable result, and good to win.

Team-mate Chris Doll finished the full marathon in 2:50:40, placing sixth over-all.

The Oda Cough

Changed this to a blog post. I am in Korea now, feeling better, so it must have something to do with Tokyo...

Hi all,

I talked to some of you about this phenomenon, today I went to see a doctor, Yonezawa in Nakanosakaue, and he confirmed one of the explanations.

I ran very well in Korea in September, best was a 37:32 on a hilly course, so I expected to smash all my over 40pb's this winter.

However, when I got to Tokyo, and it got a bit colder, the…

Odawara 10k/Nov. 4.

Today's race was a bit better than Takashimadaira, as a car held me up for a few seconds, so I would have gotten under 37. But I clearly couldn't get the pace up. And it seems the limiting factor are not my legs, as they are not tired. I will have my breathing checked, as I always cough after hard runs. But 12th was not bad, eventhough the race was small - too bad there were no age-groups. And yeah, the race itself was great, well organized, super -friendly people - they even gave us a map with… Continue
